Springtime Pruning Begins at the Redstone Vineyard

Springtime· Vineyard Life· Winemaking

12 Apr

Kicking Off the 2020 Vintage How have you been doing lately? How are you adapting to this new (temporary) normal? It's been a hectic few weeks for us. We have had to shift our business model from predominately selling our wines to restaurants, which are now closed or slowed down to only offering takeout sales, to selling our wines online. While many people have also slowed down or have had to quarantine themselves, we've entered into our busiest season – pruning and bottling season. ... Vineyard Life· Winemaking

We wrapped up the 2019 vintage at The Storm Cellar just over a month ago, and it is proving to be an exceptional one!! This year has been our most challenging yet – not only with the weather – but also with launching our wines for the first time, getting our name out there, and balancing the sales life with the vineyard life. We hosted two dinners in the vineyard, co-hosted six wine dinners with the Colorado FIVE culinary team, attended seven wine festivals, threw eight pop-up tasting room ... Dinner in the Vineyard

Vineyard Life· Wine Dinner

A lot has happened since our last blog post! Spring treated us well, the vines thrived without any frost events, and fruit has officially set in the Redstone Vineyard. We’ve been thinning, tucking, and suckering, to make sure that the grapes enjoy an effective ripening season. Our water supply has been strong, and the warm, sunny days are really helping the canopy to take off and provide enough energy for the grapes to begin the ripening process. In mid-June, we hosted our very first wine dinner ... Read More about Dinner in the Vineyard

Hello! Our first blog post is certainly long overdue! We began documenting our journey on social media before we even closed on the property (seriously, look back through our Instagram feed – it has been a wild ride, for sure). Thinking about writing this post has been daunting. Do we seriously try and recap everything that's happened here since we moved out two years ago? Since that's not the answer, we'll share a little here and build upon it. The learning curve when totally shifting ... Read More about Greetings from The Storm Cellar!

What a blast!! 🌿✂️ We had the incredible op What a blast!! 🌿✂️ We had the incredible opportunity to speak with viticulturist Fritz Westover, educator and owner of @westoverviticulture, tonight on episode four of season two of our Somm Series.

We dug deep into the topic of vineyard management (see what we did there? 😏) and how better vine management translates into better wines.

It’s always a careful balance between art and science, when crafting a well-structured wine, and we hit on topics like pruning, soil composition, climatic challenges, regional differences, and vineyard consulting on a virtual platform.

Fritz is something special. He is smart, has excellent delivery - especially on hard-to-understand topics - and he *gets* winemaking.

We love working with a vineyard consultant who respects both sides of the craft.

Follow Fritz at @westoverviticulture and sign up for his newsletter. If you’re a grower, being a member of his Virtual Viticulture Academy is a must.

And the 2020 Estate Field Blend was on point tonight!!

Special shout-outs to the following friends - that we saw - for showing up and saying hey!!

While you might not grow your own grapes, healthy vines and effective pruning are where it all starts, when it comes to creating a high-quality wine.

Join us here on IG Live, at 5:30 p.m. MDT, as we chat with Fritz, viticulturist, educator, and owner of Westover Vineyard Advising, whose mission is to help grape-growers produce consistent and sustainable yields, resulting in better wines.

We’ve worked with Fritz in a virtual capacity since 2018, through phone calls, emails, and his helpful and timely webinars at his Virtual Viticulture Academy. It was a non-negotiable for us to share a bottle of our 2020 Estate Field Blend, since the story behind this wine will be so poignant for a vineyard manager.

Chill down a bottle of this gold medal-winning wine and get ready to hear a side of the wine conversation that deserves much more attention from wine enthusiasts than it does.

As Fritz says, “Measure twice, prune once.” 😜 Applicable for the vineyard and for a multitude of life applications!

We welcomed our friend Denise Gardner to our fourth episode of our Somm Series. Denise is a multi-hyphenate within the wine world, and we were thrilled to chat with her over a glass of our 2020 Estate Dry Riesling.

Denise is a winemaking consultant, holds an M.S. in Food Science and Technology, worked as Pennsylvania’s state enologist and as a sensory scientist at one of the nation’s top wine analytical companies, and is also a wine educator and speaker, whose goal is to make wine fun and accesible.

Denise has been our winemaking consultant since our first vintage in 2018. Her accessibility translates into how she guides us within the decisions we make, especially within the chemistry realm, and her calmness during times of our own freak-outs has been a godsend.

When someone gives a calm delivery in times of stress, like Denise has done for us, this translates into an understanding that that person knows their field, knows the process, and knows what to tell you to succeed.

Follow Denise at @dgwinemaking and be sure to sign up for her monthly newsletter, the Sip & Swirl, for tips on buying and finding great wines, pairing wines with food, and making a wine lifestyle an attainable and exciting goal!

Big thanks, Denise, for taking time to chat with us tonight. You know how much we appreciate you!! 💓

We first met Denise at VinCO in January of 2018, when she was a key speaker at this annual winemaking and viticultural conference.

We’ve worked with Denise over the past four vintages, and she has been an integral part of our decision-making and winemaking process. When we were searching for a consultant, we wanted someone who was well-versed in cool-climate winemaking and obscure varieties, with a serious focus in chemistry.

While Denise has been a state enologist and a sensory scientist for Enartis Labs, she also keeps wine relatable for the wine enthusiast, by offering educational series on her website and social channels that are engaging, fun, informative, and down to earth.

We will be raising a glass of our 2020 Dry Riesling and going through some serious tech on this estate-grown wine of ours.
